THE DARKENING OF THE SUN

In Matthew 24:29 Jesus said, “Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light…”

 Revelation 6:12, 17 echoes the words of Jesus, “…and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood…For the great day of his wrath has come, and who shall be able to stand?”

 We think of the sun actually becoming black, and the moon really turning into blood, but I believe that the Word of God is conveying to us that there will be darkness in the land—the opposite of light.

 In Exodus 10:21-23, the last plague God sent upon the Egyptians was darkness, “…and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days…but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.   Darkness speaks of the judgment of God upon sin.

There was darkness when Jesus was on the cross, at the time that the judgment and wrath due all mankind was poured upon Jesus. “And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.  And the sun was darkened…” (Luke 23:44-45).

 “The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the Lord come…The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining” (Joel 2:31, 3:15).  . Isaiah 60:2 says “For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people;

It is a literal darkness that covers the land in the last days – not necessarily a physical darkness but a spiritual darkness – A TIME WHEN PEOPLE CANNOT SEE THE TRUTH OF GOD RIGHT BEFORE THEIR VERY EYES!

But if we follow Jesus, we will be able to see the truth, for He assured us, “I am the light of the world; he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life(John 8:12).

Read all of 1 Thessalonians 5:2-9, but in particular verse 2 says, “..the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.”  Those  who are in the night – in darkness – will not see the day of the Lord coming!  Verses 4-5,9 go on to say, “But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness…For God hath not appointed us to wrath.”
